Brown Girl Haircare: Routine & Must-Have Products Pt.2

Hey, Uhkt!

Thanks so much for coming back! I appreciate you stopping by, and without further ado, let’s jump right in, shall we?

After shampooing, I sometimes—and more often lately—jump straight into conditioning. I usually skip this step and head straight to deep conditioning, but since I’ve built up an empire of hair products, I’ve been giving conditioners a try. Here are a few that have really left their mark...

Aussie Miracle Moist Conditioner with Avocado and Jojoba Oil
This brings back so many memories. I've tried a lot of products over the years, and I remember when this one went viral back in 2021. Let me tell you, this product would just melt into my strands, making detangling an absolute breeze. And the best part? It was large in size but easy on the wallet. Being natural can come with a hefty price tag—good conditioners usually run anywhere between $15-20 for a standard size. But this one? Only $8! I rushed to my local drugstore, and it did not disappoint.

As I Am Pomergrante & Passion Fruit Conditioner

This right here was a delight also pleasant smell just like the shampoo and you know that both worked well together. Just enough slip for detangling and left my hair feeling soft. Also for this a little goes a long way.

Mane Choice 4-Way Conditioner with Japanese Cherry & Chia Seed made the list, and it's simple—it smelled amazing and had a nice thick formula, perfect for my coily strands. We thick, curly-coily naturals love a rich conditioner. Anything light or runny, like a lotion, is a no-go for us. I’ve always appreciated Mane Choice, especially for the quality ingredients they used in their older formulas (they’ve since changed them, so who knows what they’re using now).Still, it’s a good conditioner nonetheless.

I loved the Dark and Lovely Anti-Shrinkage Cleansing Conditioner. One thing I really appreciated about this line is when they said "anti-shrinkage," they meant it. Shrinkage has always been my main struggle—and still is to this day! But I can honestly say this helped reduce it. It's crazy how my hair can be down my back when straight, but then shrink up to just behind my ears when curly. I mean, the difference is drastic, but what can I say? Brown girl problems, I guess. This line had me in a chokehold back in 2018-2019. I went wild and stocked up, and now I’m down to my last bottle. By the way, they discontinued this too, just like I mentioned before. I really wonder why they always scrap the good stuff and leave us with what we’ve got now. The best thing about this product? It was super affordable. If anyone from the Dark and Lovely team is reading this—please bring this back!

Deep Conditioners:

Deep conditioning is my absolute favorite step in my hair routine.. I love a good deep conditioner that just melts into my strands. When it’s time to detangle, my fingers just glide through, my detangling brush is coasting through—the knots loosen with minimal effort. Girl, it’s amazing! Especially since detangling can literally take hours (if you know, you know). But with a good product? It cuts that time right in half!

I got this great idea to make a list of brushes and styling tools I use—some I love and some you shouldn’t even bother buying. So do comment and let me know if that’s something you’d be interested in!

Now, let’s jump right into it! One thing I’ve learned about conditioners is that on wash days, you want to balance protein and moisture every other week. You don’t want too much of one or the other. Back in the beginning of my hair journey, I used to make my own deep conditioners, much like I do with pre-poos. I’d mix up some powders, oils, and sometimes even throw in a little conditioner for that extra oomph. But then I went a bit product crazy—and, let’s be real, a little too lazy to keep making my own! So, here’s a list of some of my favorite hair masks, and a little recipe for you too if you’re into DIY.

Here’s a sample recipe for you! (Side note: Did you know henna powder can be used as a protein treatment as well as a natural dye? I use it every 6-8 weeks as a protein treatment. It can get messy, so be careful!)

Mane Choice Heavenly Halo Hair Mask has such a milky, rich scent—it's not overpowering, and I really enjoyed it. The formula is nice and thick, just how we like it. Detangling was a breeze, and even after rinsing it out, my curls were left defined and super soft. If I had to rate it, I’d give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. This is definitely one of those masks that delivers on both moisture and curl definition.

Camille Rose Holiday Cocoa Mélange Hair Mask—Camille, we need to talk because this right here, girl! But seriously, the smell was so decadent, and the consistency was just like cake batter—it even smelled like it. The way this defined and hydrated my curls left me pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, this was another limited-time product, but it was amazing while it lasted. I just wish they'd bring it back because it was a game-changer for my wash days.

Camille Rose Coconut Cream Penetrating Treatment—one thing I really appreciate about Camille Rose is that the first ingredients in their formula are usually what’s advertised on the label. Unlike some other products that scream Argan Oil Infused or Coconut Babassu Conditioner in big letters, but when you check the back, those ingredients are buried at the bottom after 10 fillers. I love a clean, easy-to-read ingredient list, and Camille Rose delivers on that. Plus, this product is definitely a keeper. I loved how it worked on my curls and would 10 out of 10 recommend!

ORS Hair Mayo is an OG in the natural hair game. This product—my mom might have even used it back in the day. It's been around for sure, and for all the right reasons. When I did the big chop and started growing my hair out for the second time, this was literally the only good hair mask I could find in Egypt that worked for my hair type. It gave me amazing slip, had a nice earthy, herbal scent, and I can definitely say it helped with growth and moisture. With natural herbs like horsetail and nettle leaf—both known to stimulate hair growth—the ingredients were great, and it wasn’t too expensive either. Loved this one! My rating: 5 stars.

Well, Sista, that wraps up this week’s Part 2 of Brown Girl Haircare: Routine & Must-Have Products. I truly appreciate you coming back and spending time on my blog. Don’t forget to leave a comment and let me know you stopped by. Feel free to share this with another natural friend, or someone you know will enjoy it!

See you next week for Part 3!
