Let's Talk Food… Jerk Mujadara, a Caribbean Twist on a Middle Eastern Classic
It's summertime, sis. Season of sun and bold flavors. And for me, summer always brings back one particular memory from my childhood.
I grew up near this Jamaican restaurant that everybody in the neighborhood knew about. You could smell it before you even saw it. Rich, smoky spices just floating down the block. The scent of jerk chicken on the grill would wrap right around you, teasing your nose and waking up your appetite whether you were hungry or not.
That place was alive. I had never been to Jamaica, but in my mind it had to feel just like this. The sounds, the people, the food. Always buzzing. Jerk chicken mixed with oxtails, curried shrimp, fried snapper, all of it together making its own kind of rhythm. Every visit felt like stepping into another world.
I still remember the woman behind the counter. Thick Jamaican accent, strong and welcoming at the same time. "Wha' you wan today?" she'd ask, warm but no-nonsense. I'd look at the menu and ask, "Do you still have oxtails?"
She'd turn and holler into the back kitchen, "Ey, we got more oxtail?" A moment later she'd turn back around, shaking her head. "Not today, but me can give you stew beef, it taste close. And me put some oxtail gravy on top, same way."
I said yes, and from that day on, stew beef became a new favorite. Honestly, everything on that menu was a hit. Tender, spicy, full of soul.
Fast forward to now. I'm scrolling through Pinterest and I see something that stops me in my tracks: Jerk Mujadara. Just the name had me. Mujadara, if you don't know, is a Middle Eastern dish of lentils and rice topped with crispy caramelized onions. Comfort food at its finest. Now pair that with the fiery, aromatic flavors of Jamaican jerk seasoning? Sis. I was intrigued.
It got me thinking about how flavors travel and tell their own stories. How two cultures that seem so different can dance together beautifully on one plate. This dish brought the comfort of my roots together with something new and bold. And just like that, I was right back in that restaurant, breathing in the sweet spices of summer. The best part? This recipe is as flexible as it is flavorful. Make it with chicken or without, either way it's packed with protein thanks to those hearty lentils. It's vibrant, it's colorful, and it does not hold back on flavor.
And when I make it, I don't hold back either. I load it up with vegetables. Sweet bell peppers, earthy mushrooms, plenty of onions, and of course, garlic. Extra onions and extra garlic, always. I mean, when have you ever heard somebody say, "Go easy on the garlic"? Exactly. Never.
This dish is more than a meal to me. It's culture, comfort, and a little creativity all in one pot. Whether you serve it at a summer gathering or make it for a cozy weeknight dinner, I hope it brings as much joy to your table as it has to mine.
Here's the recipe. May it become one of your favorites too.
