Lets Talk Food..Girl Let Me Put You On Pt.2
Summer 2022—let’s go back. This was a season of reclaiming myself after a life-altering change. I let go of guilt and embraced self-care, savoring amazing food, taking long walks in solitude, and reconnecting with family and friends. One spot I found myself returning to often was Hadramout. It’s unpretentious but cozy, an ideal place to enjoy an authentic Middle Eastern meal. The sweet waitress Maymuna would greet me warmly with “Marhabaan! As-salamu alaykum, Umm Zayd.” It sometimes felt like I was back in Yemen, surrounded by photos of Hadramout’s breathtaking mountains—views I was lucky enough to take in every day during my time in Seiyun. I shared countless laughs and stories here with loved ones, bonding over delicious Yemeni dishes. Hadramout truly brought a slice of Yemeni culture home to Philly.
Let me tell you about my favorite dishes. Hadramout serves the freshest hummus with warm khobz (bread), but my top pick has to be the Lamb Fahsah. This is shredded lamb simmered in a tomato-based sauce with onions, served in a bubbling hot lava pot alongside a huge pan of fresh bread. Every bite is tender, rich, and utterly satisfying—an easy 10 out of 10. I’d often add a side of rice, which complements the stew-like consistency perfectly. And the Adeni tea with milk? It’s deliciously spiced, and though I’m not usually a milk-in-tea person, here it feels like a must.
Another favorite is the Chicken Glava: chicken cooked in a savory tomato-based sauce with vegetables, served with rice and a side of house-made hot sauce. It’s flavorful, filling, and easily sharable—perfect for those trying Yemeni food for the first time. Their samosas are also great, and though I didn’t try the grilled fish platter, my brother loved it. Accompanied with a nice salad topped with onions and grilled with a nice char, it smelled delicious.
So, if you’re in Philly and want to experience Yemeni culture through good food, swing by Hadramout Restaurant.
