Brown Girl Haircare Routine and Must Have Products Pt.4
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته أختي مرحباً
Hey Uhkt,
Hope you’re enjoying this series and picking up some gems! I want you to feel more confident in starting your natural hair journey, and if you haven’t yet, I hope by the end of this, you’ve got everything you need to dive in.
This week, I’m breaking down the “O” and “C” in the LOC Method—yep, you guessed it, Oils and Creams. When it comes to keeping a healthy, moisturized mane, the right oil is key. A good oil and cream combo will give you shiny, defined curls while helping you retain length. So, let’s jump right in!
The type of oil I use on my strands is different from what I use on my scalp. For strands, a lightweight yet penetrating oil works best—it won’t weigh hair down, but still gives it the shine and hydration it craves. For my scalp, I go for something thicker, packed with growth-promoting properties. That’s usually my first pick to keep my roots healthy and happy.
Jamaican Black Castor Oil – An OG that grandmas and aunties have been have been preaching about forever, and it still gets the job done. Known for stimulating growth and being particularly penetrating for low porosity hair, this one’s staying in my stash for the long haul. Fair warning, though—its smell can be a bit strong, but trust me, the results are worth it.
Argan Oil – Another favorite of mine! Lightweight, it adds instant shine to your hair and has little to no scent, which is perfect if you’re sensitive to fragrances.
Pumpkin Seed Oil – Packed with essential vitamins A, E, and K, this oil is a game-changer for hair growth. It’s also a natural DHT blocker, meaning it helps promote serious hair growth. This one is definitely a must-have.
Creams
I’ve got a few styling creams in my rotation, but my all-time favorite is definitely a DIY blend I make myself. I start with a base of shea butter, mango butter, and avocado butter. Together, these give the perfect buttery consistency and melt almost instantly into my hair. Nothing else has given me such flawless, defined twist-outs yet!
I like to mix in some oils for added benefits—Pumpkin Seed or Vitamin E for that extra boost, and a bit of tea tree oil. You can find all these ingredients on eBay, and just make sure to look for raw butters to get the best quality.
Here’s how I do it: I use the double boiler method to melt everything down, then whip it up with a hand mixer until fluffy. Finally, I transfer it into an old jar from a hair mask or whatever I’ve got on hand.
Here’s a sample recipe you can try yourself!
Taliah Waajid Curly Curl Cream – This one right here! You know how you remember a good hair day like it was yesterday—the way you felt, what you were wearing, the whole nine. Well, this product gave me that kind of day. And girl, I snagged it for just $6 at my local BJ’s, hunny!
I paired it with the viral Wetline Extreme Gel, and baby, chef’s kiss—they did their thing! No flaking, crazy definition, and moisture locked in. Run, don’t walk, to grab this!
Okay Naturals Coconut Hibiscus Curl Custard – Another one for the books! This curl custard gave me a memorable twist-out on my 4C curls. My hair felt super moisturized after using it, and a little went a long way, which was a win. The definition was amazing, and it didn’t break the bank—I snagged it at my local Burlington for just $7. You can use this for twist-outs or a wash-and-go, and the smell? So good!
Mane Choice Prickly Pear Hair Cream – This cream worked like pure curl magic on my hair! The definition was out of this world—my curls came out bouncy, hydrated, and super defined, all in one go. I noticed my hair felt soft and springy, with a natural sheen that lasted. The only downside? It did flake quite a bit, which was a bummer, but honestly, the results were so good I’d still reach for it anyway.
If you're looking for serious curl definition and hydration, this one's worth a try (just maybe go easy on the layering to avoid flakes)!
That wraps up this series, girls! I loved sharing my favorite products and wash routine with you, and I hope this can be a solid starting blueprint for your natural hair wash day—or an added boost to your already thriving hair journey.
Thanks for reading sis, until next time.
